By circumcision we usually mean medically unnecessary (routine) circumcision of normal male infants.

For obvious reasons, very few adult men choose circumcision for themselves; many of those who do soon regret their decision.

Australian medical authorities have discouraged routine circumcision since the 1970s, with the result that the practice is now rare, largely confined to a couple of ethnic/religious sub-cultures, and a few parents who believe the rubbish they see on daytime television. The latest policy (October 2010) from the Royal Australasian College of Physicians states clearly:

Despite this advice, a small band of diehard circumcision enthusiasts keep popping up in the media, full of alarmist claims about the dangers of the foreskin and what they call “new evidence” about the benefits of circumcision. On closer inspection, these new benefits turn out to be old claims, either never confirmed or refuted long ago.
Even if they were valid they would not be great enough to outweigh the risks of the surgery, the harm of losing a functional, highly sensitive body part, and the moral harm of denying choice to an individual about such an intimate personal matter. Experts in medical ethics point out that, unless medically essential, circumcision without informed consent breaks every rule in the book.

The RACP notes that there is some evidence from underdeveloped countries, especially in Africa, that circumcision may reduce the risk of sexually transmitted infections, such as HIV and syphilis, but points out that there is no evidence that circumcision has any such protective effect in a developed country such as Australia. In any case, circumcision is no substitute for safe sex. Australian studies find that there is no difference in the incidence of most STIs between cut and uncut men, and that some STIs are more common in circumcised men. Since most STIs can be cured with antibiotics, circumcision would not be a rational option even if it did provide protection.

It is often reported that circumcision reduces the risk of HIV infection by 60% – a misrepresentation of the data from three clinical trials in Africa. These actually showed that circumcision of adult men could reduce the risk of HIV transmission during unprotected intercourse with an infected female partner by something between 38% and 66%, and only in places with a high level of female infection. In Australia the incidence of heterosexual (female to male) transmission of HIV is extremely low, and nearly all HIV cases are found among gay men and injecting drug users. It has been found that these groups derive no protection from circumcision at all.

Condoms are a much better option. Research has shown that consistent condom use reduces the risk of infection with STIs, including HIV, by over 90%, without the loss of the most sexually sensitive part of the penis. It is sometimes claimed by circumcision advocates that circumcised men find condoms easier to use, but this is disproved by Australian research which found the opposite:

A common reason why condoms slip off is because the wearer loses his erection. The most likely explanation for this is that he is not getting enough sensation through the latex, and this blunting of feeling will be more severe if he is circumcised and thus deprived of the thousands of nerve endings found in the foreskin.

Your foreskin is a valuable part of your sexual equipment. Protect it from harm by consistent condom use, and protect your baby boys from the fanatics who want to circumcise them.

An initiative in Washington by the ‘Planned Parenthood of the Great Northwest’  (PPGNW) saw over 55,000 condoms distributed throughout local universitied that were equipped with a QR barcode during National Condom Week (14th – 21st February).

The QR code could be scanned in order to check into the website wheredidyouwearit.com which let people know where you used the condom. Users could upload their gender, sexual preference, age and finally the location of the deed.

Nathan Engebretson, PPGNW’s new media coordinator said:

“Wheredidyouwearit.com is like Foursquare for people who don’t want a sexually transmitted infection,”

The greatest find of this project was just how far the condoms travelled. Some condoms made it over to the opposite coast and others across six continents (We think either the person carrying it didn’t ever get laid or just got around a lot!)

“This isn’t about bragging. It’s not about digital notches in your bedpost…Even if people have no desire to check in, they’re still getting the sense of how many people like them use condoms.”

Some have suggested this is a case of ‘Too Much Information, however we think its s great chance to raise awareness of safe sex.

Developed by Dr. Sonnet Ehlers, the condom has razor-sharp metal teeth on the inside. Upon penetration, these teeth attach themselves to a man’s penis and the device cannot be removed without medical assistance.

Speaking about the unique device, Dr Ehlers said:

Dr Ehlers has been critised for developing the device by those who feel that the device is medieval.

“Yes, my device may be a medieval, but it’s for a medieval deed that has been around for decades,” she said. “I believe something’s got to be done … and this will make some men rethink before they assault a woman.”

Anything that helps fight such a terrible crime and keep people safe is OK in our books.
